“TÖRGGELEN“,
A festival of the senses!
The
word “Torrgl” means a wooden wine press, which has been
used in the old days for wine-making. “Torggl” is derived
from the Latin verb “torquere” (wind, twist) or respectively
from the substantive “torculum” meaning a turning press.
By using this tool in those days 750 l grape juice was extracted
form approx. 1000 kg of grapes. The expression “törggellen”
(a verb which has changed its meaning somewhat) evolved later from
the substantive Torrgl. When the new vintage is being sampled in
fall, several items are sold to the guests by the wine makers. Torgellen
specifies an ancient custom at which during the grape harvest people
walk from village to village to taste the new wine as “Sußer”
– meaning sweet. With it, usually “Keschten”,
sweet chestnuts, nuts, farmer’s style breads, Vinschger bread,
bacon, smoked sausage, and other delicacies from South Tyrolian
kitchen are being enjoyed. From mid October to beginning of November
it is possible to participate in organized Törggelle- excursions
from Bolzano, Tramin, Klausen or Brixen as starting points. One
should definitely plan on participating in one of these Törggelle-
excursions as they will guarantee a wonderful experience and a long
lasting memory.
